Default Help with P1338 Code

Hello, I have finally been working on my GF's 98 A4 2.8 Quattro that she inherited (I don't know a lot of history), but I'm looking for some help.

Cars starts, runs, and drives fine. Has 199k miles on it. Manual transmission.

Check engine light on -- and has been since I have known her (3+ years -- I know BAD!).

I pulled codes and got some that through searching led me to believe a vacuum leak, which I think I found and fixed (codes have not returned for a couple days since I have done it).

The only other code I pulled has me stumped. It is a P1338, dealing with the CMP open or short to B+ Bank 1. I searched and found a really wide range of threads dealing with all sorts of different scenarios.

I'm hoping to get some type of a list of things to check in order -- most common to least common on this car.

Thanks,

Adam

you can get a sensor from a parts car for cheap. bank 1 is the passenger side.

Excellent--thanks!

I saw so many posts referring to everything except the sensor, I was convinced I needed to start someplace else.

Is this a simple swap or will I need special tools? I'm not even sure what it looks like, I will search for pictures or description unless someone has something they can post for me.

Great -- thanks guys!

So if Bank 2 is on the back and I need to change Bank 1, it should be on the FRONT right side, correct? Will it be under any covers or require disassembly or will I see it pretty easily? (I still have the plastic engine covers off from fixing the vacuum leak).

i have the 2.8 v6 and for both the throttle positioning sensors and the o2 sensors it was bank 1 passenger side and bank 2 driver side. i believe that bank 1 is always the side where cylinder 1 is located.

This car has the 2.8 v6 as well.

So sounds like Bank 1 is definitely the Passenger Side. Is this sensor in the front of the engine or in the back on the passenger side? Someone mentioned back for Bank 2, but I don't know if it's the same for Bank 1 or not. I want to know exactly where I'm going to look for it now that I know what it looks like.
