Default A High Whistling Noise

2001 A4 2.8 Quattro with 192K

I am hearing a whistling noise when I step on the gas pedal. When I lift off the gas pedal it stop for a few sec and then return but not a loud. This was yesterday but this morning when I started the car up the whistling noise was VERY LOUD once the car warmed up it went away. It return once I started driving but not as loud.

Can someone tell me what could be causing this problem?

Thanks,
Kevin

intake leak? If it goes away as it warms up, it sounds like it might be in something metal - the manifold for instance. The metal will expand and close the leak/crack.

either that or the tensioner pulley?

my guesses.

I have the 4 cylinder turbo, but a while back, I also started getting a high pitched whine that gets louder as the RPMs get higher.

I thought it was a turbo leak, but I have a boost gauge and I saw no loss of pressure anywhere in the powerband. I showed my Audi guy and asked him if the turbo was going bad, but he said no.

I know I have proper vacuum and boost (because of my gauge readings), so there can't be any leaks anywhere. I've tried to figure it out, but I found no problems or performance changes, so I've left it alone. I actually like it. It sounds like a G5 jet engine spooling up. There's a younger guy that lives around the corner from me and he works on a bunch of his friends cars and he said they all swear I have a super charger, because they're sure they're hearing super charger whine when I drive by. I thought that was pretty funny to hear.

Bottom line: It sounds like we're having the same issue, which is odd, given that we have two completely different engines. The only thing we share in common are pulleys, but I've already ruled that out. Keep your eye on performance and gas milage. If neither are suffering and you're not getting any codes, then you're probably fine - as long as you can live with it. I (personally) love it now. You may not.

Update if you find anything. I'd be curious to know.
