Vehicle manufacturers install those linings for a couple of reasons. The two that they will be candid about are the sound deadening/insulation aspects, and insulating the paint on the hood surface from the heat that can build up in the engine compartment.

The one they are not so forthcoming about is that in the event of a fire in the engine compartment of the vehicle, the clips that hold the lining are designed as "fusible links". They melt away and the lining drops down over the fire, in effect smothering it. Not designed to "extinguish" an engine compartment fire, but to slow it down enough to give you more time to get out of the car.

 

Now prove that the liner is even fire proof or even fire resistant. My guess is that it wont last a few seconds if thrown on a fire. I have already seen them melt when put near something really hot. Pretty much why I took mine off.

Must not have done a great job seeing that the hood area where the liner was is all black instead of the color it used to be.

The stock A4 liner is very thin.

 

Dont remove it if its not messed up. I removed mine and it has since faded my paint...Ill post picks if you want, but trust me.

 

To the OP:

This seems like a case of "if it isn't broken, dont fix it."
There's a reason its there, same as our fender liners and interior carpet. It may not be a crucial reason, and it may be fine to take it off, but unless you have a reason to remove it I'd leave it be.

I've thought about putting mirrored panels under the hood in place of it if my car became a show car. But if you're worried about weight savings or just looks, I'd leave it.

Yeah I've been out for awhile. I got really frustrated with the car for a bit and just kinda fell out of the scene. I contemplated a ton of different projects (even thought about picking up a japanese ride ) but I'm back! I need to update my siggy though!
