before buying it, have it inspected by a certified audi/vw technician...
besides that, you will regret it if you do not get a manual with quattro...
when buying a 10 year old car, there is usually at least a thousand $ worth of needed maintenance....
in my case there was thousands of $'s worth of needed maintenance....
if you take care of your car it will take care of you...I have never once broken down on the side of the road....
the worst thing to happen yet was that my battery died cuz I left my lights on all day at school....but I had a couple random girls push start me....manual ftw!
besides that...I would say that to own one of these cars you really should have some basic wrenching ability, and always keep some just in case $ in the bank....
for a 97 1.8tqm, expect to pay between 4-5k and be ready to put another 1-2k into it....if you have some wrenching experience you will be able to greatly subtract from the cost of any needed repairs....
parts for are cars are not that costly, it's the labor that kills....the audi cert. shop near me charges $85 an hour....and it adds up really quick....in the last two years I have done just about everything on my own and have saved a few thousand dollars on maintenence and mod install....
these cars are very easy to work on, which is a plus!
