Default How Tough Is An Audi Gearbox

Hey people,

Just curious how tough is an Audi Gearbox? I have An A4 1999 1.8TQM. I have read the turbo upgrade guide and none of the setups mention a gearbox upgrade so I would assume they are strong?

From what I've read, you can expect maybe 400whp before you even have to start thinking about the transmission/diff. 3rd gear is the weak link so going a little easier in 3rd would prolong the life of the transmission. I think 500whp is doable for prolonged periods if 3rd isn't pushed as hard.

Mike Hood has pushed stock transmissions well past 500 and even 600whp. Not sure what power level his car sits at right now but it's up there!

for 99% of guys, the 01a (stock tranny) will suffice. A good upgrade is an 01e (s4 tranny), but they have their problems too. I won't get into the upgrade, but the regular tranny, pretty much the whole driveline besides the clutch, is good for any real world situation. The worst that will happen is the transmission will break. replace it with a junkyard tranny for $200 and you are good to go.

As metal man said, the failure point is 3rd gear. don't give it too much torque shock and youd should be golden. Let's say (this is just a hypothetical) you rev all the way up with anti-lag activated and dump the clutch in third (assuming a the clutch wouldn't slip) i'd be willing to bet 9/10 times you'd break the transmission.

What I want to know is there any aftermarket producers out there that have created better transmissions for the B5 model for racing applications.
