Default I need help. My car won't engage gear.

Alright so I bought this car about 2 months ago, 2000 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T, about 170,000 miles. The week after I got it it started shifting hard just driving normally through town, so we decided to put new ATF and filter in. Once that was done though the car decided it didn't want to start anymore so we had to replace the starter. So now i can start the car fine but no matter where I move the shifter it will not engage a gear.
I would greatly appreciate some help as this is very frustrating. I'm not a fan of throwing my money away.

This might sound stupid but I have to ask, did you follow the proper procedure to fill the transmission? Many B5 slushboxes have been destroyed by people who didn't know better.

Yes, I'm pretty certain I did it properly. I bought the kit (fluid, filter and such) from Blau parts and it came with some papers detailing the procedure. I mean it doesn't really seem like a complex task. Drain it, take off the pan, clean it, replace the filter, pan back on, and fill it. I run the car for a bit and cycle the gear selector, the fluid is supposed to heat up so that the level is accurate. Although I can never notice it get any warmer, so maybe there's something to that. I don't know...

The tranny pan should get noticeably warm after 5-10 minutes of idling. Just keep repeating the cycle gear-fill procedure, I had to do it like 10 times to get it fully full after a filter change.

That's actually interesting mad cow. I wasn't aware that we might need to add some fluid after the initial change. I didn't do that when I did my change. I guess I will keep that in mind the next time I do a ATF change.

Just to be clear, you kept the engine running the entire time that the trans was being filled through the fill port, until you got a constant dribble coming out? And the engine was still running when the fill plug was put back?

The pan should be noticeably warm to the touch by the time you are done filling, fluid should be 95 F minimum. By the way, when "going through the gears" it is a waste of time shifting to every position unless you push the gas and allow the trans to shift through the gears to fifth, say to 40 MPH. If just idling, the trans will be in first no matter what forward gear position you have it in.

Yeah I thought it that very thing, but that's what the procedure said so I did it.
For the rest of your question, yes and no. I filled until overflow with the engine off. Then started it to let it warm, and like i said I don't notice any increase of temp over like 20 min of running, and then pump some more fluid in till that overflows, which is never much.
