Default I Think.

I want to buy the standard size tire for my Merc wheels. I like them and I want to keep them, however the stretched/tiny tire look isn't for me!

So 17x8.5 wheel would get a __ / __ / 17 size tire to be as close to the stock dimensions as possible.

Thanks!

Well a stock S4 wheel is narrower than 8.5" and uses a 225-45-17 tire. Putting that tire on there will probably stretch it (if that's what you have, sorry, I didn't know). I'd think a 235-45-17 would probably be close.

I was thinking 235/45 myself. Any idea how close to stock that is? I forget the stock A4 size. However 205/40 was 1 1/4" smaller than stock.

I don't know exactly how close but miata.net has a good tire calculator that'll show you. Stock A4 is a 205-55-16 and stock S4 is 225-45-17, and they're roughly equivalent. Putting an otherwise-equivalent tire on a wider rim will likely decrease its overall rolling diameter. It shouldn't be by a lot though. I'd put the 235 on there and I think you'll be close enough that the difference is negligible.

My wheels are 18x8.5 and the tires are 235/40/18

Use this calculator to compare.

I know the allroad runs 245's.
jmgrande, can I see some pics of your wheel/tire setup? I need to fit some tires to my 18x8.5 CHs.

225/45 or 235/45 would be your best options. Most 225/45's are slightly wide for a 8" wheel so they shouldn't be too bad on a 8.5".

I'm running 19x8 and 235/35, and I think it looks awesome. But damn, the Falken tires on my car are expensive! ~$150 a piece... And that's the discount price.
