Default Idle and Fuel Issue

So I spent about 2 hours searching the archives but didnt find too much.

I have a 2000 A4 Quattro 1.8T Tip it has roughly 92000 miles on it.

Recently I noticed a that on cold starts it would idle really rough. Today I went out and the car would turn over but not start. After two or three cranks I could get it going but if I put it in gear or tapped the accelerator it would stall out. If I let it sit in idle for roughly 5 minutes I can drive the car.

only a year and a half old starter, battery, and alternator...

I also have noticed a surge in idling when coming to a full stop or from going between reverse and forward gears

Fuel filter? Fuel Pump?

thanks everyone

TS

Need to find someone with a Vagcom or just someone to check what code you have. Could be the maf sensor is going out causing a low reading. This will cause the rpms to jump up/down when coming to stop since the ecu is trying to adjust fueling for that lower maf readings. Block 032 with the vagcom will give an idea if the ecu is adding fuel for low maf readings.

cool thanks will do..I assume its close to needing a replacement with 92K miles

I didnt think it would cause the non starting issue when cold though..you think thats it also?

Could be since the ecu isn't sure if there is enough air moving into the motor. It could also be an issue with the secondary air injection which pumps air into the back of the head during cold idle/starts.

I have experienced some of these symptoms...
The car idles unevenly (900rpm +/- 20) when cold.
Surge in idling when shifting from first to reverse. Feels really weird.

The car starts fine. Runs fine when warm. Can start driving immediately.
Idle is not perfect even when warm, it will vary 900pm +/- 5, enough that you can hear it.
Fuel consumption is maybe too much on the high side for my kind of engine.. But not sure yet!

Getting VAG-COM next week sometime.. It's in the mail.
