Ignition problem when the weather gets cold....help.
I HAVE AN AUDI A4 2003 3.0 QUATTRO. I ENTER MY
CAR, PUT THE KEY IN, TURN IT AND NOTHING HAPPENS. I HAVE TO FIND THE
RIGHT SPOT AND RIGHT TIMING IN ORDER FOR IT TO START, BASICALLY
FIDDLE AROUND WITH IT . THIS ALWAYS HAPPENS WHEN WINTER COMES
AROUND, IN THE SUMMER IT STARTS PERFECTLY WITH NO PROBLEMS. I HAD
THE CAR SENT TO THE DEALER FOR THE COIL RECALL, BUT YET, STILL THE
SAME PROBLEM. NOT SURE WHAT IT COULD BE, IT'S WEIRD HOW IT ALWAYS
HAPPENS WHEN WINTER COMES AROUND. HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

hey guys, before you shoo him away to the B6 section, he already tried over there with no help, so I suggested he tried here to see if he could get some help. I know the collective knowledge in the B5 section should be able to help...
Dose it crank slow when it dose start if so it could be the battery. My car when its cold out turns over really slow and some times i wonder if it will be enough to start the car.If the battery is old i would replace it with one that has high CCA (cold cranking amps) and see if that helps.
i was thinking the switch also... i would replace or at least clean it. does the key have coding security. I install rfid access basically the same technology used on the key of the audis. have u changed the battery in the key? also the receiver of the key might not be working properly in the cold. i am not too familular how this is actually implimented in the vehicle but may be a thought to adress a little deeper. good luck!
I'll bet ignition switch. Somebody might have sprayed some oil or something in there at some point, and it gets thicker in the cold and prevents something from moving or making contact. You could test this by taking a hair dryer to the switch for a minute or so, and then trying the key. If it works when it's warm, then likely either there's oil in the switch or it's just so worn that the little bit of contraction that happens when it gets cold prevents it from making contact.
