Probably starting to see the deterioration of your headlight switch. Although I haven't seen this particular issue, the switch controls your dash lighting and they're known to be problematic.

This is indeed interesting. I had one B5 that was the headlight switch, but another that was intermittent with which gear I was in. it was weird. After a lot of banging my head off the wall and all I finally got a signal tracker and tracked it to the wiring in the trunk along the deck lid. The headlight switch is tghe first and easiest thing I'd check.

If it was me, I'd check all fuses and also have a multimeter handy. Sounds like a pain in the a** type of job once.

On another car, I once had the situation where if I would turn the headlights on, the windscreen wipers would come on and if I would turn the windscreen wipers on, the headlights would come on. It turned out to be a stuffed windscreen wiper motor which was somehow sending a signal back to the ECU and triggering the headlights to come on. A short circuit if you would.
