Default Looking at a 1998 2.8Q

Hey everyone,

I am looking at purchasing a 1998 or 1999 2.8L quatro with the 5 speed tranny. I have done some searches but I cannot find the answers I am looking for.

As you probably guessed, I am just looking to see your opinions on this model, or if you know of any common problems that they might have.

Also, what is the difference between the 1998 and 1999 models?

What is the sport package?

Thanks to everyone in advance. Hopefully I will be over here soon.

compare these fact sheets and you'll get all the info you need...

1998

1999

Sport package has stiffer springs and is lowered about 3/4". 7 spoke 16" wheels (non-sport has 5 spoke 16"), 3 spoke steering wheel (this can be had as an option outside the sport package as well). Not sure but the front sway bar may be solid as opposed to the hollow non-sport one.

and BTW - the 1998 and the 1999 had exactly the same curb weight - 3384 lbs. Add 100 lbs for automatic tranny, and lose a couple hundred for the FrontTrak(non-quattro). awahl63 might be thinking of the diff between the sedan and the avant...

Keep in mind both years have "half year" models... the 1998.5 and the 1999.5. Normally cosmetic changes during those leaps.

Thanks for the responses.

I was looking on the MSN Autos website and I was not too impressed by some of the reviews people were leaving. They were talking about AC problems, multiple front suspension problems, and other various repairs that made them not too impressed with the car. Any comments on that?

well, there are some front control arm issues - they go bad and need replacement. I have never had an AC problem... Truthfully - the only problem I had that was not related to basic maintenance of an aging vehicle was a dead turbo... But mine's a 1.8t - a 2.8 has no turbo.

Every car has problems, but keep in mind an A4 costs more to maintain than something domestic or japanese.
