So recently when I drive my 1997 Audi A4 1.8l turbo quattro 5 speed car, when I shift from 1st gear to the 2nd, If i shift exactly at 3,500rpms it sounds like the car is backfireing / banging. At first it did not happen, then it slowly started to get louder and louder. If i shift at 3,000 , 3,250 , 3,750 , 4,000 , it does not make the "bang" sound/ it has to be exactly at 3,500. It also happens SOMETIMES when shifting from 2nd gear to 3rd gear. Same RPM (3,500)


Any Ideas?

 

You didn't mention whether the bang noise comes from the exhaust or other location. If it's coming from the front, I'd have to wonder whether there's a mount going bad, and the engine is shifting during high torque, and falling back into place when you shift.
