Maintenance
2001 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro 144,000 km ($7000)
So I got the car, in excellent condition in and out. So far i have done rear and front brakes and rotors, brake flush, transmission pan service (remove pan and change filter and gasket and refill with new fluid) I believe the front diff was done with the transmission (am I correct?), change rear diff fluid, and oil change. ($1700)
So i keep topping up my power steering fluid and take it in and its the power steering rack. Have that scheduled for Jan 7. ($1400) Can some one suggest on what preventative maintenance should I also ask them to do while they are replacing the power steering rack.
In February i am going to replace the timing belt, all other belts, tensioner, thermostat, and water pump. (~$2000) Can some one suggest if there are any other things that should be looked at/replaced while doing the timing belt.
In march I am doing a coolant flush, engine flush, fuel system flush, replacing the spark plugs, and changing the fuel filter. (~$800)
If anyone know of any other preventative maintenance work that could or should be done please let me know. Also the prices are in Canadian dollars in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, for a certified mechanic and a shop that specializes in Auid/VW with all Audi OEM parts, are the prices reasonable?

Sir you must be very wealthy because who in their right mind would give 7000 for a 12 year old B5, especially with the 4 cylinder option.
Secondly... 1400 for a power steering rack!!!!????? I replaced the rack in my car, cost me like 250 for a rebuilt rack. 2000 for the timing procedure is expensive. If I didn't have any tools, time or knowledge, I'd be willing to pay 1000 max.
Then again, I am in the US.
Perhaps our prices are a little swayed.

Yeah cars are a lot more expensive up here, when I was car browsing I was surprised at US prices for cars. I looked at 4 audis and they where all around 6k to 9k for a 2003 one and i picked the 2001 because it looked mint and ran great, I'm not expecting to race this car probably chip and turbo and exhaust, just want it to last for a very long time as i love the look of the B5 model and this was the last year with all of the options that came for this model.

Read the DIY forum here, post questions, buy some tools, and start doing your own work. For the labor of the timing quote, you could buy all the parts to do ALL the maintenance you've mentioned, plus the tools to do it all, and have beer and food money left over. They're not awful to work on and you'll gain a lot of appreciation for the car.
