Unhappy Need new engine, how much car is worth, trying to sell

I got low pressure oil light with rattling noise from my A4 1.8T 2002. Shop told me that I need new engine (new bottom) and that cost will be more than cars' worth. about 7-8K.
Can someone help me understand this better?
How much I should expect if I want to sell it as it is?
Does anyone know who might be interested in it in Metro Detroit area.

Really sad now, I loved this car, it was fun driving it.

Thanks,

Jay

If a shop is trying to sell you a motor for $7-$8k they are bending you over backwards. You can find a used motor for way less, hell you could get a fully built motor with all the best parts and get it put into the car for less then that.

Some shops seem to be using the "oil sludge" issue to get some extra money.

Is there a way to find out if it's just the oil sludge problem.

Drop the pan and inspect the oil pump pickup tube and filter screen - if you have sludge you'll see it there.
