Need some clarification on FOB replacement
So I have searched about replacing an FOB if you do not have one to program a new one, but found conflicting information.
I purchased my 1999 with only a valet key. So I have not current FOB to work with.
What are the steps I need to take to get a new key,new fob and program the new fob?
If there is a good "new" option for the fob and key that does not involve the dealer and is a good alternative i am open. I just don't want crap quality that works only so so. I am willing to spend the money if I have to, to get something that will work well long term.
Info on this would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Jess

I posted this a while back:

Might be worth a shot, though I don't know it will end up being all that much cheaper than the dealer.

You only need your valet key in the ignition in the key "on" position to program the new remote with key combo. I just did one in our parking lot on an 01 a4 and it worked great. With that key in the ignition, key on, manually lock the door from the outside with the new key. Press the unlock button for a couple seconds and the doors will unlock. Open the door, take out the ignition key and you are done. You won't need the dealer to program your key, but you might end up having to buy the cut key portion from them. Or buy a blank flip out from them and have them cut it there off your old key, if they have a key machine. You can buy the other half of the key (the remote portion) from them as well if they aren't too expensive. As CCA4 noted, you can get the key and remote from that company, and probably cut to your car by the vin #. The only thing I didn't see on their website is something to protect themselves with. It is possible that your car had been rekeyed, lost keys and all locks changed, something like that, over the lifetime of the car. So if a key is ordered from the vin# you'd get a key that won't fit your car. There would be no returns from any company selling you a key since records can't be checked as to locks ever being changed on a car.
So before ordering a key over the net, make sure you are ready to eat the cost of the key should it not fit your car is what I'm trying to say. For this reason we don't sell the cut key portion here at our dealership unless we have the customer face to face and explain what could happen if the key doesn't fit.
