So I'm planning to finally do a much needed clutch job to my car and since I bought this car recently I decided I should change the gear oil as I don't know the last time I did. The car has 191k miles in incredible shape (the previous owner did all maintance possible, he is a neighbor but he doesn't know if the fluid was ever changed) this is my first car and my family's first manual so we have no idea what kind of oil of if we need to do anything special when changing it...? I have googled it and found instructions on how to but since I don't know when this was last done should I completely "flush it" or just empty and refill? And what kind of oil? Any favorite brand? (Ecs tuning Ra4 Stage 1 clutch kit is going in if that means anything)

 

 

Yes I do, I guess I must not be typing in the correct thing because I tried and just came up with a bunch of threads about shifting problems

 

I used 3 quarts of Redline MTL in my 5 speed. Shifts wonderfully. If you're in a particularly hot climate you may want to run the MT-90, but this can get really stiff at colder temps.

The fill plug is on the driver's side near where the front CV shaft comes out. It is a 17mm allen (be sure to open this before the drain plug so that you are certain that you can put oil back in after draining). The drain plug is a special 16mm? triple square tamper proof. I bought the oil and drain plug tool from FCP for a reasonable price.

When filling, I got a length of clear vinyl hose at the hardware store and put one end in the fill hole and ran the other up through the engine bay with a funnel.

 

With the miles you have, buy new drain and fill plugs. There's a good chance you'll either damage them or have to take them out with a chisel (been there, done that). They're not expensive and you don't want to demolish one and be stranded without the ability to go pick one up, or to find that there's a two day wait for one to arrive.

 

I was planning to pick up a magnetic drain plug from ecs for it (i got one for my oil and it works wonders) and ill just get a regular fill plug. Where can I get this special 16mm?

 

I got mine from FCP, but I'm sure ECS sells one too.

 

Searching ain't that hard.
