I'll be brief. I need help...advice or simply a two-bit opinion. After sitting in my garage throughout the past winter, during which I spend some time up-grading and/or adding a few cosmetic and performance bits to my 1998 Quattro 6, I charged the battery, fired it up and attempted to drive it slowly to the dealership for an oil change. Well, I got about two blocks when it died or seized up.
The local Audi dealer towed it in and later called to tell me the timing belt broke damaging a number of valves. The options he gave were the following: new engine for $6K plus, a used engine for about $3k plus or I could find an engine myself and they would install it for about $2K. I should add that the used engine suggested had 125 miles on it, more than the broken engine in my B5. So the question becomes, given that the cost of repair will likely exceed the current market value, what to I do. Fix it or junk it. No matter what I'm a bit pissed that I spent about $3k on cosmetic improvements and a number of hours in a cold garage installing same. The only good news given by the shop foreman was that the mice which had used the car as a winter residence did not chew any wiring...which was rather nice of them I thought.

My car just got stolen and I aways wanted an Audi AWD. I found a good deal on a A4 or B5 (I am new to this) and all I want to do is drive it. It has some issue that i hope this form will help me fix

I am a Honda fan (thats the car that got stolen) But Honda dosen't make a AWD car and everything I read about Audi makes me a Audi LOVER not just a fan

About 2 weeks

Fell in lust during test drive

100s of used cars were considered but this one just felt right.

Default 98 Quattro

yeah, i love the car, when it runs. I bought it in February this year and it's been an intermittent mess since. It was a one owner trade in with 150K miles on it. I have a little over 160K in it now and am waiting to rebuild the head from a most likely broken valve spring. I have put several hundred into this thing already in new coil packs fixing random misfires and then the #4 cylinder decides to snap a spring. Overall the quality of the car is great, except the engine at this point.

I am working on it and going to rebuild it all. I do need some guidance on what are the best and most cost effective horsepower mods that I can do while the head is open. Cams, what type of springs/valves to use, really, anything that will help the A4 get some power to the road.

Thanks in advance...

Hi all, I'm Alex and I just picked up an A4 2.8 manual Quattro this past weekend. It has some issues - ABS light on, fuel gauge bounces around, CEL code for SAIS, etc - so I'm sure I will be on here asking quesions. So to answer the questions in the thread...

Do you like your new audi?
Love it so far. I bought it knowing about the issues so I can't fault it for those.

How long have you owned it?
Nearly a week

Why did you decide to buy one?
The Quattro system should be great with our crazy Colorado winters. Plus it's just a nice car all around.

Was there another vehicle you were thinking about before you bought the audi?
I thought about an econobox of some sort - a Neon maybe, but I am coming from an Eclipse GSX so giving up AWD didn't sound fun.

Angry A Death of in Fargo

Unfortunately I must use the past tense in writing about my B5. Two weeks ago yesterday, while taking my 1998 A4 2.8 in for an oil change, a number of the 32 valves decided to go south instead of heading north, the result of a broken timing belt. I was informed of the problem after a $199.00 towing fee, by the Local Audi dealer who said they would be happy to install a new engine for $6K plus, or a used engine ( with more miles on it than mine) for $4k plus. It seems that tearing down and replacing the broken bits is no longer an option. I suspect the reason for which is turnaround and good old christian greed as well as mechanics trained only to rely on the computer and replace, not restore...
In short, even though I had owned and loved the A4 for 12 years after a number of discussions with my wife, during which I was reminded or rather asked why I had spent $2k on cosmetic upgrades last winter as I hadn't driven it all winter or the winter before that coupled with its' current market value, etal, and to end further reminders of my wasteful ways, I had said vehicle towed away to its' final resting place.
Given my history of Audi ownership. as explained by my beloved spouse, its' likely to be a few months before I buy another...In the mean time I'm stuck driving our Nissan Murano, which well a decent runner lacks the panache of an Audi.

Mourning in Fargo
