Questions to answer:

Do you like your new audi?
Yeah, its not the best one out there but it's mine
How long have you owned it?
About 5 months , it's been doing pretty well
Why did you decide to buy one?
when I saw the platform, I knew I need one besides my b6 and b7.
Was there another vehicle you were thinking about before you bought the audi?
My a4 has the v6 I was looking for the 4 cylinder 1.8t whichHas way more mods available sadly 😤

Hey Kkylon0! Welcome! Can you give us more more information about your B5? Looks like it could be a '97? In which case your 2.8 V6 might be an AFC engine, 12v. Don't despair about not having a 1.8t, as the 2.8 12v is a great, smooth and very dependable engine, if cared for properly. There are at least a few of us here who are very fond of that engine.

^ Ditto what Randy said! Sounds like you've got the 12v AFC V6 blues. They are a good engine that's relatively easy to work on and quite reliable when maintained. I actually specifically sought-out the 12v for my first B5 and don't regret it a bit.

All that being said, you're right that the 12v isn't a tuner type of engine. If you want to gain power there is an established path, but it is a lot different than the 1.8t and will take more of your time and labor than money (to a point). Dollar per Dollar, the 1.8t is always going to be quicker and a bit more nimble, but the V6 makes nice smooth power and sounds fantastic.

I should probably do the right thing and respond accordingly:

Do You Like Your Audi?

Absolutely!

How Long Have You Owned It?

A little over a year. I bought it in early 2020 as COVID was ramping up. That worked out well as it took me about a year of working on it to finally make it daily drivable.

Why Did You Decide To Buy One?

I've admired the B5 ever since I first saw them. I've had a lot of VW Mk1 and Mk2 projects over the years and the B5 was an aspirational purchase to me. I realized recently that they are at the bottom of their curve, so I better get one while I can. Making the leap from simple VW's, I did a lot of research and decided the early 12v V6 was the best for me. They're also the cheapest and least desirable, which worked for my frugal budget of under $1k.

Was There Another Vehicle You Were Thinking About Buying...

I really needed to get out of having perpetual project cars (VW Mk1 / Mk2's) and get something I could modify but also take seriously and use daily in a professional setting. I was casually considering cars like the Accord sedan V6 6-speed, Acura TL-S 6-speed, and Subaru Legacy GT, but they are all in high demand, much more rare, and significantly more expensive.

Do you like your new audi?

I love it! It’s my first car. I’ve had to do lots of work to it since I got it but luckily I work in a shop so it wasn’t too expensive. It rides super nice, very closely relatable to my parents 2010 gold tdi which was my favourite car to drive prior to getting my Audi. I drive it on 2000km round trips every few months, and love every minute.

How long have you owned it?

I got it last March so not long but I’ve put 37000km on it since I got it and it was a treat to drive the whole time!

Why did you decide to buy one?

I needed something with AWD living in northern Alberta, and the b5 and b6 quattros were all over Kijiji when I was looking for my first car. I saw the car on Kijiji, it had 113000km on it and all that was wrong was a rusted out fender, which I’m sure is what deterred people. I went and purchased it despite someone going to see it the next day. After I put a $500 down payment on it so I could go get it the next day and left, the person who was supposed to look at it the next day called the seller and wanted to buy it unseen. So glad I went and purchased it when I did.

Was there another vehicle you were thinking about before you bought the audi?

Since I was into rallycross and looking to buy an AWD, a Subaru Impreza or outback seemed like the ideal car, but looking for Subaru’s didn’t turn out super great, all were modded shotty, rusted out, or needed head gaskets. Plus they were all around $3000. I got my Audi for $3200 and it was all stock and good bones.

Default A4 Quattro new to me

I picked up an Audi A4 Quattro and I have been loving it. Having said that, these are a nightmare to work on and EVERYTHING is plastic so everything is broken. I am here to find answers to my perplexing questions (some of which are related to Audis.)

I used to own a VW Fox and HATED it b/c it was not reliable and all plastic so much if it was broken. I am wondering if this will be the same.

Concerned about repair costs with an Audi as well as reliability. So far I have seen that some things are ridiculously over-engineered and unnecessarily complicated, (Driver door lock assembly)...

Should I be concerned about the 2001 piston ring issue? What will need attention and what should I look out for?

1.) I like mine a lot.

2.)I’ve had my a4b5 for just about a year now

3.) it was under a thousand dollars and for a manual awd vehicle with no rust whatsoever I had seen it as a steal. (And it handles AMAZINGLY in the snow!!)

4.) I was wanting to get another 2nd gen Mitsubishi eclipse since that was my first car and I enjoyed it a lot. I had also looked a mk4 Jetta and a Honda civic.
