Newbie needs help!
Just got a '97 A4 1.8T Quattro a week ago and sent it over to a mechanic to have it checked. I noticed the engine would somewhat "quit" or "cut-off" when the RPM would reach 4,000. There are also issues like when the a/c is on the engine idling will have a problem at times and would seem like it would turn off
He said i need to change the MAF sensor.
Any suggestions?
Thanks everyone!

ok thanks, will have it checked asap.
by the way, bumped into a couple of guys who knew the first owner of my newly acquired vehicle. they all said, the computer box was sent to germany to have it upgraded or chipped (not so sure about the right term they used) by ABT which kicked it up to 240 horsepower. I haven't really felt it since there's still a problem with the air flow sensor...etc..
Would it be possible for the original owner to take the chip out of the ECU before selling it off to another person? The person i bought it from knew nothing about it.
thanks

the stock turbo will be hard pressed to make 240hp. i dont believe this number without a dyno sheet backing it up. its probably closer to 200- if this is infact the chip you have.
i dont know much about the company, its not one of the more popular chips people get. the previous owner could have swapped it out with a stock ECU (computer that controls the car) before it was sold, or if it was not a solder-on type of chip, removed it. however most chips are solder-on type which are perminantly attached and very hard to remove.
your maf should be reading 2-5g/s at idle and around 170g/s at redline in vag-com. if its highly erratic or no where near those numbers its probably bad.

thanks, will have the ecu checked.
the dealer here in the Philippines is charging me around $450 for the MAF. guess i should try looking for the part online.
Philippines? One thing I miss about the Philippines is fresh Jack Fruit and the hot Pandesal bread. Funny how some things from your youth stick in your mind.
Give this guys at ECS Tuning a call about a MAF sensor. I've heard a few guys say good things about them.
