I tried posting this in one of my old threads, but didn't get any response. So, I am trying a new thread.

I am starting to get a bit concerned. Yesterday I was driving around town and the oil temp got to about 225. It never got higher than that, but I am concerned that the car is running too hot. The engine feels really hot when I shut it off. Could this be a sign of a problem? Is there a way to get the oil to run cooler? When I first bought the car about 3 weeks ago it was running around 180. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

That temp sounds fine man. Mine runs around that. Are you using synthetic? I'm sure you are .

 

Yes. I am using Mobil 1 Synthetic.

 

Are you using the normal sized filter or the oversized filter? Coolant temp in the middle of the gauge? Coolant full?

My oil doesn't get up to 225 unless I'm doing HARD canyon runs or auto-x'ing in 100+* temps...

 

I am not sure what filter is in it. I have only had the car for about 3 weeks and the previous owner had the oil changed right before I bought it. He told me he used Mobil 1 5-30, or 0-40 depending on weather. The coolant temp is dead center and moves only if at idle for a while (the oil climbs then as well). The coolant is full last time I looked about 3 days ago. No noticable leaks or anything. The valve cover has a little leak, but that is it.

I thought it was high too..which is why I am concerned.

The previous owner had a lot of cooling work done before I bought it. The car was overheating. He had the water pump, thermostat, 2 hoses, oil change and had an AC charge.

Well, I took her into the shop on Saturday. It looks like the oil cooler is clogged, which would explain why the oil won't cool down. You can see the coolant seeping from it. It also looks like the someone put the "green" coolant in the car. Ick! So, I am having the oil cooler replaced and the coolant system flushed and an oil change. I am hoping this will fix matters

well running the green stuff isnt bad as long as thats all thats in there, but now that you mention that the oil temp goes upto 225 and you have a clogged oil cooler makes me worried about my car, of all the B5's ive owned i never payed too much attention to the oil temp until recently.

 

Yeah, they checked the temperatures coming in and out of the oil cooler and that gave them the suspicion that something was up. You could also see the coolant seeping from the oil cooler. They said you can get calcification build up in there and it restricts the flow of coolant. I am hoping this fix will help the oil temp. I am also having the valve cover gasket replaced to fix the small oil leak I have.

 

Mine was just a tic over 225 today. I think I will be ordering a new cooler and not take any chances with this. We need more feedback from people on here about this I think.
