Well I primed it and painted it. Looking good. Now I've sanded it with 1600 and put another coat on. We'll see in the morning. Maybe another sanding and one more coat before clear.

haha, sorry obnoxious. I just stole my friend's.

First nooooooo on sanding wit 1600 then painting it. The 1600 is way way way to fine for the paint to stick to. I live in WI and have graduated the auto body program from W.C.T.C.

First you should sand it wit 350. If it peals or chips go a lil lower. The deeper the scratches are the better the paint will stick. You just have to add more coats to cover them. Make sure you sand and clean every thing. Now there is a window to add coats. Do not let it dry all the way. When you spray a coat it will be shiny and wet. This is for nonglose paint. When drying it will get a dull look to it (looks foggy) it should be tacky. As soon as you see that put another coat on it. keep doing this to the amount of coats you need. Dont let the paint dry. Then add the clear coats just like the paint (dont sand it). The more clear coats you have the better it will hold up to rocks. Let it dry and there you go. Now if you want a show quality paint wet sand it wit 2000 and buff the **** out of it. I dont know if this helps but thats how i do it even out of cans. I have painted my old car, my 01 zx6r, rims and what not with cans, and wet sanding them. Its like glass. Do it right it will be the best paint job you will see and you done it your self.

The first two coats were done like that, but I had to go to work. The spray can says its fully dry in three hours and I had a good seven. Sanded with 1600 (or maybe just 1200 I dunno) and then sprayed another. Its dried overnight, so now I'm going to move on to the clear. Your thing is confusing though, I understand wanting tacky paint, but you also talked about sanding, is that for if the paint sets up?

no its before you paint. As soon as you put that first coat down your sanding is done. If the paint dose dry and u need another coat, sand it with 600, clean it and then paint it. Make sure the paint is fully dried before sanding. Any thing over 600 is to fine to paint over. The paint wont stick well at all. 800 and up is really for wet sanding.

Sorry its hard to follow. Theres allot of info to put in a lil post. I could do a write up but is it worth the time.

Oh yeah, I sanded with 150 and then 220 to prep. The rings have a bit of a clear coat themselves I had to cut through. Got it looking like bushed aluminum then painted. Clear coating now.

I'm looking for $200. They're in really good condition, haven't been on the car long and they have the halos. You can paint the housings, I've seen some threads discussing this. Here's a DIY:
