Default power steering pump making noise?

2000 1.8 manual atw. I thought is was my ac compressor (it may be that, also). But, now I think it is my PS pump. Also, when I turn the wheel I get a 'rubber on metal, not lubricated' noise, inside the car, down at the steering junction thru the firewall. All is working well right now, but what is in store? Rack? Thanks

PS, I thought I was finished with maint today after the Fuel Filter. NOT.

Check the P/S fluid reservoir. My car had a slow leak from the bottom of the reservoir and would whine when the fluid level got too low.

I am having this exact same problem on my 2.8 except when I slow down and try to turn I feel like I have just lost my PS. Checked the reservoir and there are no leaks but when I took the cap of it was under A LOT of pressure like it may have been clogged or something. If you find anything out let me know...

Hows the fluid look? Shitty? its possible your pump is bad because when you go faster its easier to turn the car, example. MR2 has a elec power steering pump that shuts off after you reach 30mph because its then useless. Also check the rack from under the car and see if theres fluid coming out.
