dont know really what you mean? when in neutral the engine will want to idle and that is less than 1000rpm. and what do you mean by bouncing back? and whats normal? do you mean shifting to neutral, than letting it coast, than shifting to gear and letting the clutch out?

Yeah, when I put it in neutral before stoping at a red light the pointer should slowely go down to 1000rpm or a little less. Sometimes mine will go below really fast and then the engine will sound like its about to give out or shuts off, but it will quickly go back to normal.... Hope you can understand what im saying...... Thanks

Mine does that too.. When you put it in reverse, does it go a bit choppy and gives throttle by itself at random?
Does the RPM fluctate slightly?

Could just be a dirty throttle body control valve if it is an older A4 or the maf is getting bad.

It's like that all the time. I'm convinced its the tb control valve somehow, getting some vagcom errors on it when i try to see the raw data from the sensors..
Try using some solvant and clean the throttle body, hoses and air filter.
