Default Question about Audi A4 oil usage...

I asked this question before but I didn't get a real definitive answer. Can I put a heavier weight oil --straight 40 into the engine? Will this do damage? A friend of mine told me this my be a cheap way to post-phone a costly cam-tensioner repair. Any truth to this?

Futrell Autowerks had the previous owner of mine putting 5w-40 into it. Thats a disel oil, and supposedly wont harm it. I'm using 5w-30 though.

If you've got the 1.8T then you should be using 0w40, otherwise 0w30 or 5w30. If by "straight 40 weight," you mean SAE 40, then no. That would be the dumbest idea I've ever heard. And your cam tensioner is already worn, as we told you in your other thread. You're not going to get around that.

Got several experienced mechanics saying it's not a bad idea. So, I am going to try a heavier weight. I will update my progress.

Not angry. Just trying to communicate how bad an idea using SAE 40 is. It's even worse in a sludged up engine. If he's really talking about SAE 40 then he's about to kill his engine for good.

Gonna try de-sludging first, see if that works. Then, will consider a heavier weight.
