iv only changed the break disks on my car, but i i just change the rotors can i keep the calaper togather and put it back on without having to do anything else? pretty much do i need a special tool to change the back rotors?

 

you might have to compress the plungers in the brake calipers, but no special tool that I've ever had to use. Hex wrench, flathead screwdriver, and maybe a pair of vise grips should do it.

 

You have to remove the caliper from over the rotor but you don't disassemble it. There are two Allen socket bolts that hold the caliper to the carrier - 7mm I believe. When those are removed you can lever the caliper off the carrier. Then the carrier comes off - a pair of 17mm hex bolts. Take that off and the rotor comes off. In the rear make sure the e-brake isn't set or the rotor won't come off. Be sure to put new pads on anytime you replace rotors. you need a special tool for the rear to reset the auto adjusting parking break. you cant just compress the rear pistons like you can the front, you need a tool to twist the piston at the same time. you can get something called a "break cube" or rent the nicer tool at any autozone.

 

yea i just got the tool but now im trying to compress the piston back in when it turns and im running into a problem...when i use the tool to compress it when it twist the rubber boot that thats between the piston and the back is twisting with it...i didnt think it should twist with the pistion....am i using the tool wrong or something?

 

The boot shouldn't twist - use a pick or a small screwdriver to separate the boot and piston before you continue. Also be sure you pop the cap off the reservoir so you can compress it more easily.

 

yea thats all it was, thanks guys. Its all done, dont notic much different besides the fact the back left doesnt squeel like two spider monkeys making woopy...lol
