Rear Differential Oil Leak
Hi there Experts,
I have an Audi A4 Quattro (2001).
I went to the mechanic to get the Oil Change on this one and when I looked underneath the car , its rear Differential seals are leaking.
Any Idea how to get the new seals and how much would it cost me?
At the same time ,sometimes I see the oil on the floor which is leaking from front and its Engine oil , What could be the reason for the leakage?
Any Suggestions/advice Highly appreciated.
Cheers

The seals themselves are like 20-40 bucks in most places. Replacing the seals is pretty straightforward. You have to remove the axle from the differential on both sides (few bolts on each. hex or star, forgot what size), then you remove one bolt on the inside and then you can take out the old seals and put in new ones.
Also make sure you do not put too much fluid into the differential.
I did that when I changed the fluid and it caused the original seal to fail, forcing me to replace the seal.
And in regards to the front of the car, the valve covers and tensioner gaskets are usual places of leakage.

Wow. Your mechanic has some *****.
The axles use XZN bolts which require an 8mm 'double-square' tool to remove without damage.
If the leaking seal is at the connection of the propeller shaft at the front of the rear differential, be sure to mark both the shaft and flange so they are reassembled in the same location to avoid any vibration issues.
