In the past when I messed with my steering wheel and steering wheel airbag I stopped disconnecting the battery after the first couple times. However, this was simply because I figured out how to mess with the steering wheel without disconnecting the airbag connector. So if you feel comfortable doing so this could be an option.

 

All set -- the steering wheel is straight. I pulled the wheel out just enough so it would slide onto the next spline, and then the next spline after that. The little plastic piece wasn't able to spin freely, so not a problem. Resecured retaining bolt, airbag and battery ground strap.

Each spline change turns the wheel about 2-3 degrees.
