Replacing a brake light in a B5
the B5 has 4 nuts, one at each corner, behind the trunk interior lining. just get that lining out of the way, and you can get to those 4 nuts. then pull the whole light assembly out side the car, not into the trunk. then remove the black backing from the red exterior light and change the bulbs. the B6 only has one nut easily accessible and then the entire light swings out. not sure about a 2001.5
So from what I understand, there are two ways of doing this: 1)take off the 4 nuts and pull the assembly from the exterior 2) Undo the tabs and pull the bulb cluster inside the trunk. Seems like the tab option would be easier. I didn't get to trying this just yet but I will give it a try this week.
The tabs literally shouldn't take you longer than 30 seconds. Once you look at it you will realize how simple it is. I just pull off the closest tab, and once that one is free the others come with just a minimal amount of wiggling.
If i cant put in the passenger fog bulb my running lights isnt working at all. Is it because im missing a bulb. Does anybody know why the running lights are not working?
I was able to successfully change the brake bulb last night. It took a few minutes to work the tabs free but otherwise it was straightforward as you all said. The tabs snapped back easily. Not sure why they just don't give the instructions in the manual. I imagine the headlight assembly is something similar. Thanks for all the help!
Headlights are a bit more difficult. You may be able to change the bulb(s) on the driver's side without removing the whole headlight, but you'd either need to remove the headlight or air box assembly on the passenger side to replace it.
Either way it's easier to pull the headlight to replace those bulbs IMO.
