Cool "Safe" mode is killing me

Great forum. This is my first post though. I have a 97 A4 quattro V6 w/ 180K. I bought it 2 years ago. The first time I changed the oil I accidently drained the Auto tranny fluid. Hadn't even taken it out for a drive. Since then I replaced the rt. front lower control arm, rear wheel bearings, vacuum hoses, plugs, brakes, rotor, and and a few other things. I wouldn't take it back though, it's a hell of a car. Great ride. I have one problem. I just put a new battery in the car and now my radio is stuck in "safe mode" The manual says to hold in the am and fm button down until "1000" comes on the display, but It won't go out of safe mode. I have tried it with the car started/off/park/nuetral/waited one hour/2 hours/disconnected batt/ every combination and still that stupid "Safe" light is still on. I'm going nuts w/ out music. I have the code but It won't let me punch it in. anyone else have this problem.

97 A4 Quattro B5 V6 2.8 Auto. Delta Bose Concert Radio w/ tape and 6 disc changer.white ext/ black leather int.

peace
