i think that i will just connect it to my headlights if thats not a problem, do you think it would work if i did that? i want them to turn on with my headlights since i have my headlights on all the time hehe. how would i go about connecting them, should i just run the wires to where the bulbs are connected?

I think that should work, but make sure they are grounded really well

Mine are wired to the battery now, but I manually disconnect and connect. I don't want to run it into the car with a switch, I want to do it automatically, avoiding the switch and the need to push the button on/off. Thus the desire to find a power source in the engine bay I can safely tap.

The ground should always be equal in size but preferably larger than the power cable. Find a bolt on the metal body of the car and attach the wire under the bolt so it's tight against the metal chassis. I don't think you'll need any resistors, otherwise it should tell you on the packaging

In short, one wire from the light goes to the ground. The other wire goes to your headlights.

one last question, if i decide to go with the 24cm strips basically what you have but shorter? would i need to get any resistors or could i just get the power from the headlights and then ground it?

Make sure that you aren't trying to ground over paint. It has to be bare metal.

I thought that's what I had... it's been a while. I don't think you'd need resistors. There should only be 12 volts on the headlights anyways (correct me if I'm wrong). Just connect one end to the headlights and one to the ground.
