So I broke down....
Here's a couple of pics with the oem heatshield... just for reference. I would also like to note that it really doesn't work well in this type of setup (for those looking into it and think they can get away with not replacing the heatshield).
So here's the heat shield that I made... it is a very simple design. While making it I didn't really see the benefit of having it go all the way up to the headlight and get in the way like some of the other ones I have seen. I was planning on going to my buddy's house (since he is really good at this type of stuff), but with the holiday our schedules didn't work out...... This was all me, so it is pretty rough. So I made this, took about an hour or so and it works very well I think. I still need to get some weatherstrip for the edges, but I did grind them all down and rounded the corners to make it a little more safe to mess with. Did I mention that it cost $8 and I still have more sheet metal to make something else if I see the need?

You should, it was a fun little project.... about 2 hours all in all I'd say (would have been quicker if I had everything all at the same time). The sound is MUCH better, my younger son (3yrs) makes the psshh sound when he gets in my car and asks me to make the car do it, it's really funny! He also say's "Dad, your shooting the other cars! psshh!" Well worth the time
