It seems like 5W30 is what we're supposed to use according to this article.

Sorry but that article full of assumptions, and well, wrong.

My manual actually says I should be using 50 weight since I see temps above 65!

I was using 5w40 in mine because thats what the previous owner's mechanic used. Then I found out why I could never find more than one brand that sells synthetic 5w40.

Its diesel oil! Not a big deal I guess, but I'm using Castrol Syntec 5w30 now.

50 is a racing weight.

30 weight is normal for cool temps and 40 weight for people that drive in 80+ temps. Fact is that most "euro" marked oil tends to be 30weight.

Truth is you should base what oil weight you should be running by what type of oil temps you see while driving the car.

Info from the Redline oil web site for 15w50 oil
15W50

The ultimate high-temperature protection in Red Line engine oils recommended for street use. Good for engines that regularly run very high oil temperatures. Best for engines that run large clearances such as air-cooled engines or large-displacement, all-out racing engines that see occasional street use. Provides 25% more viscosity in bearings than petroleum 20W-50s. Not recommended for use in cold climates where temperatures are at or below 10°F or -12°C. Not recommended for street use in production engines that see sustained oil temperatures below 200°F (those engines should use Red Line 10W-30 or 10W-40).
