It's not the VSS. I changed mine and there was no improvement. I never thought of the battery though although I doubt it is. My battery is on its way out. I will change the battery shortly and give some feedback.

 

I hate to bring back a month old post but my 96 a4 has the same problem. The speedometer and tachometer don't work. The odometer and everything else works fine though. My biggest problem is my car only has 118k miles and all the used clusters for 96 have 160k+ is there a instrument repair place you would all reccomend that I can send my cluster out to be repaired or something?? Thanks!

 

Im going to order a cluster from ebay or out of a junkuyard, but I have a question. Does the cluster have to be programmed? Im not really worried about mileage I just want to see if it fixes my issue. I just don't want lights flashing and things not working properly.

 

No I'm amost positive they don't have to be programmed I think I'm going to send mine off to some place in Tampa to have it rebuilt hopefully they are able to fix it!!!!

Speedometer & Vehicle Speed Sensor problems

 

So i installed a new VSS today and still no go. Im wondering if my audi has the broken magnet ring. My cluster worked yesterday from my house to work. It never dropped out, but when i shut the car off it started bouncing at 0. It hasn't worked since then. Im thinking its cluster bc the needle bounces at 0 instead of just laying there. I don't have a vag computer and no one in town does so i can't perform a cluster test. Any ideas or suggestions?
