starting problems...
searched the forum without success...
Got in my 99.5 A4 (1.8) the other morning, turned the key and had a rough start. It turned over for about a second, then died. Tried starting again, and it just whined-just the starter sound, with no firing up.
Battery is good; it's getting plenty of juice when the key is turned. Just seems like the plugs aren't firing.
Is this the coil pack(s)? I don't have any software to diagnose the problem, so if it is, I won't be able to see if it's one, two or more of them.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

seems like an ignition issue, either it's a connection with your ignition or ignition control module, coil packs wouldn't cause your car to not start, when they go bad,the only thing they will do is cause one of your 4 cylinders to misfire.
Look at your ignition control module and the connection between your ignition.

Did you actually test the battery to make sure it was good?
To fully test you should do 2 things:
1. Put a meter on it and make sure you are close to 12 v when car is off
2. Leave the meter on the battery and have somebody turn the car on, make sure the volts don't bottom out. My friend had a battery he swore was good, but the car wouldn't start. When I kept the meter on and he turned the key the volts dropped to like 4 and the car never started. Put in a new battery and good to go
Just a suggestion
