Stealership :(
This thread just got me thinking about whether or not this had been done to my A4 (which I was pretty sure it had). I just looked through the service records of my Audi I bought in late October, and according to the latest receipt the tensioner and timing belt were replaced roughly 600 miles before I bought it, and the mechanic wrote "updated" next to the tensioner. Was there an updated tensioner available for the 97-99 1.8T?
Water pump, all belts, tensioner assembly, thermostat, clutch, transmission drain & fill, differential drain & fill all at the same time, 99,850 miles. I bought it with 100,325 miles, it's got 102,600 now. I couldn't believe it, the guy had all service records since the car had 0 miles on it including average MPG each time he filled the tank. The machine has been very well taken care of (thank goodness)
300 seems totally wrong to me as well. I'm not calling anyone a liar but I would be a little skeptical and would make sure what was included in the job. Wouldn't want anyone to have to pay out the a$$ for the timing belt breaking.
My parts were 130 with everything and I bought them for 10% above cost from a friend who works at a foreign parts shop. Tensioner, roller, h2o pump, therm+housing, seals, all Continental belts. My good friend who is a VW tech put these parts on for 400. Total job was $530, also included was an oil change, new dipstick, coolant, and tightening my engine mount with new bolts after 1 was missing. This is an intense job which requires the front clip to be pulled off.
I agree with the above posts about the tensioner, that is critical and the stock one is a piece.
