Default Steering the Quattro

Hi,

I have a 97 A4 1.8t. This is my first Audi. Just want to ask you guys if the steering is really stiff or heavier than the bmw 3 series or mercedes C class?

If it should feel better then what kind of problems do you think I have? suspension? power steering rack?

thanks!

Are you trying to say that your steering is very stiff?

Hard to say because the steering on my 2000 is very firm while the steering in my 97 is much lighter. Same size/weight wheels, same rack, same suspension, so I'm not sure and really havent thought much about it. As long as it is bearable and doesnt groan or leak, I wouldnt worry.

It feels very heavy compared to an E36 or C-class of the same year. Also, whenever I make small turns the steering wheel doesn't really rotate back easily. I'm sorry but I'm not very good with cars. If ever, is there anything I can check or do to lighten it up?

thanks!

Ok but it's not an e36 or c lass. It's an A4. No point in comparing. Check your fluid and tire pressure. My steering wheel doesn't return completely to center either in either car, but close enough. Another thing I havent really given much thought to.

I have an E36 and an A4 right now and used to have an '02 C320 and also an '02 C32. I also used to have an E46 328i and an E46 M3 and that steering was the heaviest out of all of them but got easier as the speed picked up. But from my observations, they are all about the same. For comparison, a Honda Accord has light steering. Have you checked your power steering belt, fluid or pump?

I am fairly sure its normal the way it is. Mine is that way and so are both of 1.8's and were not too worried about it lol. Unless it is actually hard to turn where you feel the need for both arms it shouldn't be a problem.

Of the B5's I've driven I always thought they have heavier steering than other cars. Personally I like it but its not super hard.

It may feel heavier because you're driving the front wheels. The Benz and the Bimmer are both RWD.
