Has anyone had an issue with the storage compartment not closing?
I'm referring to the storage compartment right behind the shifter. The aluminum plate (when you press down on it it opens), not sure if it's the ash try (could be)??????
If so, can it be repaired at home

as in under the radio? if so then yes thats the ash tray and it sounds like either something sticky got in the mechanism or a wrapper or something came out of the tray and is blocking it from closing enough to latch.

to take it out you just have to gently pop up the plate around the shifter (its held in place by pressure clips), and then you will see the screws that hold the tray in. take those out, clean the area out, and you might find your culprit.

 

i got to remove the 2 bolts, but the ashtray doesn't seem to come apart from the heat/AC controller. There is some play but does not want to come out. Are there any other bolts or clips that need to be removed. Do i need to pull out the radio of the heat controller to get the ashtray completely out.

i found out how to fix it

You have to purchase the keys to remove the radio, ($3.00 from ebay), remove the radio, then the thermostat controller comes out after the radio comes out. Then the ashtray can be removed, fixed and/or replaced.
