Superchargers for 2.8's
#11
I think it's going to be easier to do a DIY turbocharger installation than a DIY supercharger installation. Less custom fabrication to do. You won't gain as much in the low-end as a SC but you'll have less parasitic loss. Superchargers actually eat up quite a lot of your power to actually spin themselves.

realistically, how big of a turbo would you even be able to run on the 2.8? I think I read someplace that neither of the PES superchargers push more than like 8 or 10 psi (depending on the tune) because the 2.8 can't handle much more than that

Uhh, no it wouldn't. You don't even need a turbo-specific manifold unless you're looking for absolute maximum performance. You can mount it a bit further back easily. It'll have a bit more lag, but it'll be way cheaper and easier than a supercharger. You'd probably want a GT30 or so. It wouldn't be IDEAL but it would still be a good improvement.
Or you could go for twins like maybe GT22s but we're not looking for expensive, so...

Why couldn't the 2.8 handle any more boost than 8-10psi? I would think with the larger displacement it could.

Depends on how strong the internals/seals are and what the compression is, etc.. I don't know, but if they didn't make the engine with boost in mind then it might not take a lot without rebuilding it in a boost-friendly way.
