tdi quattro misfire
Hi guys. Ive got a '97 b5 tdi quattro with a quarter of a million miles on the clock. Ive just replaced the entire front suspension complete rear subframe plus lots more to get it through its MOT test, at considerable expense. The day after the test I started the car in the morning to find that it had developed a very bad misfire. As soon as theres any load on the engine it coughs and farts cuts out then catches. basically making it damn near undriveable. Using a very very light touch on the throttle I can just about hold it at 40mph on a level road, until i get to a hill of course. Now i live halfway up a scottish mountain and work 20 miles away so you can see my problem.
This only started when the weather changed to cold and wet. One day I'd driven home but had to stop off at the local cottage hospital (I work as an engineer for the health service) before i switched the car off i putmy foot flat on the throttle. It revved to 2000-2500rpm before cutting out and catching again. I gave up swithed the car off kicked it a few times then went off to do the job i had to do in the hospital. Got back to the car about half an hour later and it ran perfectly. Used it again later that night and apart from a couple of coughs ran ok. used it again the next morning and it was worse than ever. kicking it some more didnt help this time though.
any clues as to what might be the problem? without plugging it in to vag com I have no ideas. I did unplug every sensor i could find and checked for dirty or damp contacts but they all looked fine. I'm gonna check the fuel filter today to see if that's sludged up. The PO used to run the car on veg oil so its possible that there is sediment in the tank that has congealed in the cold, but its been much colder and not been a problem.
Ive spent so much time energy and money on the car lately that I really cant face much more hassle, but i cant afford another car either so have to keep it running as long as possible. The clutch is on its last legs and at least one of the big end bearings (rod bearings i think in US) is knocking very badly so it might be cheaper to replace the whole engine.
wonder if my dad would garantaur me on a bank loan so i can get a newer a4?!
