Default Thinking of buying an A4 (B5)

Hi iam new to this forum, I signed up as Iam considering buying an A4 TDi, I will be looking for an early example (B5) platform and wondering what one to go for, either a 2.5 or a 1.9?

Also any things to look out for, which models to avoid etc, maintenance and servicing, I have not had much to do with these models, I hear that the 1.9 TDi is a great engine, also there are different power outputs within the 1.9 range (110/130 BHP)

Would I be better getting a 1.9 or a 2.5, insurance i not a problem, I have a family of 5 ie, 3 young boys and a wife, would I be better looking at an A6?

Any help would be great and look forward to contributing further in the future, all the best Steve

As a current A4 owner and former A6 owner, I'd definitely recommend an A6 if you intend to take the whole family anywhere. The difference in interior room is substantial. My daughter's only 10 and she's already grumbling about the lack of leg room in the back of the A4. I'd also recommend getting a newer model if you possibly can; Audis don't tend to settle into lives of quiet dependability, so better to spend the money up front to get a newer example than dole out 500-1000 at irregular intervals.

we dont get the 1.9 or 2.5 engines here in america, so most people wont have an opinion. although, the 1.9's are available in some vw applications (no b5's) and their reputation in those is pretty good.

I would get an A6. The A4 is getting too cramped for road trips. I would look into the C6 A6. They aren't too expensive and you get a much more up to date interior.
