Default thumping sound from engine

Hi,

my engine makes a low frequncy thumping sound in the background, more clearly audible standing beside the car or being inside it. Too me it sounds like a loose part, it doens't sound too serious but is fairly annoying to a perfectionist,. anyone had a similar sound or know what could be the cause? Thanks

The year and engine would help, also, try to be more specific. Trying to diagnose a problem by sound when you're actually next to the car is difficult, let alone reading a description. Does it change when the engine is revved? When the car is in gear (if it's auto)?

of course, thank you.

2000 , 1.8ts manual, I believe the sound disappears when the revs go higher, at least it is most audible at idle, but I will give it another very careful listening to be sure. If I put it in gear and drive at low engine revs I believe it is there but very difficult to distinguish in the mix with normal noise from road, tires and wind.
