Timing belt and clutch, should I just pull the engine?
Hey guys,
My timing belt is due to be changed in about 20 000 km and my clutch needs to be changed in the near future, it is starting to slip while I'm on steep hills. I was intending on dropping the tranny to do the clutch and removing the bumper etc to do the timing belt but I am thinking I might just be better off to pull the engine...what do you guys think?
Also if I do end up pulling the engine what else should I do while I have it out? I am planning on chipping it in the fall so what kind of preventative maintenance should I consider to take on the added boost?
Thanks

i say it depends on the total mileage. i say if you pull the engine, do a bottom end rebuild too. if you wont be doing anything extra, theres no reason to pull the engine. it would make everything else way easier, but it is more difficult to pull the engine.
Keep in mind that you have wiring harnesses that have been baked brittle by engine heat for 13 years. You can easily break wires trying to move them around. Personally, like redline said, unless you're going to do some internal work, don't tempt fate. The bumper comes off in a few minutes and you can have the front opened up in 45 minutes or less. Service position really is a non-factor.
I agree it would be less risk to just drop the tranny but changing the clutch lying on my back underneath the car is not something I would really like to do. I am not a big fan of working on my back, it makes me dizzy and I am also always worried the car is going to crush me lol, you never know.
I would do the TB, I also need to fix something in the cat/downpipe area (exhaust leak), would probably do the snub mount also and I'm sure there are a lot of other small things I could do while in there. The car has about 240 000 km on it.
Not to mention I think I would have a lot of fun and learn a lot doing it this way. I don't really need the car until I start my new job in september so the downtime isnt a big issue.
Are there any good DIY write ups for pulling the engine? All I can find is one for the s4.
