Default Does anyone know how to time your timing belt?

I had a minor oil leak on my Audi so I decided to open up the engine and check camshaft seals. Everything went pretty smooth without any difficulties but when I took my camshaft gear off i noticed the lip that was in the middle was broken off and broken peace was stuck in the camshaft. So I went ahead and bought new camshaft gear now I'm not really sure how time it properly.
Can anyone help?

What part are you trying to time? The timing belt side, or the cam chain? Here is a pic of the cam chain. You can see where the timing marks are, and you have to have 16 teeth between them.

As for the belt its pretty easy, just put the valve cover back on and compare the mark on the cam gear to the notch on the valve cover. You also have to make sure the crank mark is lined up along with the cam.
