Timing off 1 tooth? How to check? How to fix?
2000 1.8t atw... Swapped my timing belt, now I have a rough idle and no power on the bottom end (less than 2.5k rpms). Runs great past 3k rpms. All things point to timing off a tooth. How do I check this? (Btw, no CELs) Can I check this by just popping off the timing belt cover, and if so... how? Once I confirm I am off a tooth, how do I fix this? Please, be detailed... this would be my first attempt at adjusting timing. I assume I will have to remove the timing belt again, which would mean yet another timing belt tensioner... correct? Will I need a timing gun? Are there any tutorials on this? Thanks to all who help!

I did the search and there are 2 very good procedures with pictures for you to follow. This is not just a matter of swapping the belt and no you won't need a new tensioner. You just have to pin the one you have.
Good luck.
