Default Center driveshaft question..

My carrier bearing is shot and I got a line on a low mileage center driveshaft out of an 01 1.8tqm. Anyone knkw if this will bolt up to my 96 2.8qm? I believe the driveshafts are the same in all the 5 speed cars but was hoping to have someone with more knowledge than I chime in.

Thanks guys.

*might* fit, but I think some of the early model year B5's (96-97) came with carbon fiber drive shafts. My old 97 had one. I don't know why but I want to say the dimensions were different. Are you buying online or from a junk yard or what? At the very least I would double check the dimensions of yours versus the one you're looking at buying.

The carbon fiber drive shafts must have been a lot lighter.

Did they go back to metal ones?

Hello stranger. Haven't seen you around here for a bit now that you joined the Jeep world.

Ya...the 98, I believe went to an all metal driveshaft. I did a whole lot of internetting last night and found some interesting information. The carbon shafts are supposedly heavier than the metal ones but were 'safer' as they would probably shatter if they broke and hit asphalt at speed. Less of a chance of catapultation(realword??). I've found an Audi site that lists the metal one as an alternative to the carbon ones. @ CCA...it is a partout on Vortex and the guy quoted me a great price so I may just do it. I haven't dropped my exhaust to check out the carrier bearing or end joints on my car yet but I am getting a hell of a clunk when I shift or press in the clutch. Only other thing I can think of is excessive Rear Diff backlash, as there is a lot of slop.

BTW - CCA, didn't you sell your B5?!

Since you're switching out the driveshaft, check for play in the frontmost rear differential mount.

The rubber on mine was starting to fail, so I filled in the gaps with windshield sealant (a replacement diff mount is hard to find and expensive).

Thanks Redmond, when I first got the gunk when shifting I suspected the front diff mount so I filled the gaps with some thick rubber to stiffen it up. I can pry on the nose of the diff and it barely moves now
