Before I begin. I drive a 97 audi a4 1.8t. It has about 150k on it. Automatic. About a month ago I started noticing that when I put my car in reverse it sometimes jumps right into neutral. But after having it parked for an unknown amount of time (not very long) the reverse would work just fine. About a week ago, my car now refuses to pop into reverse. The dash board reads neutral when in reverse. After messing around with the shifter the dashboard now lit up and all the gears, park thru 2, all light up at all times now when running. Soon after the reverse went the rest of the gears started acting up. As in, shifting thru the gears. The gears don't like to shift at the usual rpm. Sometimes they will only shift at 4000 rpm. At 65-70mph the car won't shift while running at 4000 rpm and the car starts to get hot. Nothing to hot to worry about though. Any help would be much appreciated.

check your transmission computer is right under the passengers seat. my car was doing the same thing and i look under the seat my computer was under water. water was coming in from the air filter the cover was crack.

 

I finally have enough time to take a look at my car. Been to busy. I'll post back after I take apart the car tomorrow.

 

it could be the gear selector magnet right under the shifter
