I did a junkyard search and it appears that they are compatible. But I was able to find a dozen or so with the DHX code.

It's my daily driver and have had for almost 40k miles now. One day it started shaking a little when I would accelerate, it got worse as I had to drive it around to get back home, I thought it was the axles so I took it to the mechanic. He said the axles are fine but the trans is bad

Not an transmission expert by no means, but from dealing with 3 trans changes over the last few months...

Is it shaking all the time (even when cruising), or during acceleration?
Shaking would point more towards a torque converter rather than tranny. I would pick my local tranny shop's brain and see what they see.

To change them, you still need to get the tranny out (a bit of a pain). But you can get a torque converter for little money. Could be that it is all it takes?

My tranny's were from quattro's (96,97,98 years), 2.8 2V, and I still have one known good and one unknown torque converter here; would assume they are the same as yours.

As to mixing and matching trans: My 96 2.8 quattro was supposed to have a CJP in. I found and bought a CJP, only to find out (when the old one was out) that there was a DRN (97/98 years) in there. Obviously, CJP and DRN were 'swappapable'. The DRN was running on the original CJP controller and program. So chances are pretty good that your swap would also work.

Certainly, can't be different engine type (my and the donor were both AFC or so), no Tiptronic vs. non triptronic, etc.

Where are you located? Why not find some diagnostics service locally https://areacodes.net/469? You can only make it worse following all the advice from unverified sources. I would understand if it were some minor things. But in your case, I would prefer an experienced opinion. Look for an expert in your area and he may fix in no time. Let us know later what was the problem and how you fixed it.
