Transmission Problems
Hey guys,
I don't know a whole ton about cars, but hopefully someone can shed some light for me here. I was driving around LA in my 2000 A4 Quattro, Automatic trans, not sure which one it is, I can check if it makes a big difference. Anyhow, I was going up a hill, not too steep, and my transition just went out.
Now, I'm assuming there were problems leading up to this I was un-aware of, and that it didn't just "go out". I did notice a slight slip the day before, but otherwise the car seemed to be running fine. I do have a small oil leak I need to fix, but the mechanic said it was an extremely common one easy to fix, and to get it fixed soon as I had the $$, but to make sure oil levels were ok till then. However, a co-worker then told me that oil leaks can cause severe damage to your transmission. So, first of all, does anyone think these two problems are related? And secondly, what should I do? Should I shop around for a used transmission and get it installed? A new is out of the question due to cost. Or is such a problem too much to fix, and is the car better off scrapped? The car is at 122,000 miles. I'm the third owner, had it for 3 years, and I have had the cooling system worked on and timing belt replaced since owning it. Other than that aside from minor things like brakes and control arm work, I have not had any problems. Any help would be appreciated, also if you think I should look into a new (used) transmission any suggestions on where to look would be helpful.

What does it mean when you say your transmission "went out"? Does that mean you have no drive at all? Is it just on a hill (if your fluid is low it will really show up on a hill) or do you have no drive any where? Does it smoke? Did you drop all the fluid?
What does "went out" mean?
