Default Transmission problems? how many quarts?

Just yesterday my transmission started making this horrible noise like it was super low on fluid. Confused on why I couldnt check the fluid myself, I found that its something that they want the dealerships to do. However, assuming I can drain whats left in there by jacking up my a4, does anyone know the correct amount of transmission fluid to put in?

1 quart at dealership is 25 bucks :/ although to have them do the whole job its over 500.

Any suggestions or advice?
