Default Turbo question(s)

hey guys im new to the audi world/forums, i recently bought a 2000 a4 1.8tq with 92,8XX miles on it.

i have a question regarding turbos, as of now and for a while im holding off on mods till i get better with the audi motor ins and outs but have some basic ideas for the future.
however i had a question that recently came up with a buddy..

does anyone know how a turbo form a 1g eclipse compares to the one in our cars?
i think they have a TDO5-16G-7cm and we have like a K03 or something of the sort.(im not great with turbos/setups yet)

was curious of if there were power differences between the 2 or if they could be interchanged with little effort.

and while were on the subject, how our turbo compares to the 2g eclipse, i think it uses a Garret T-25. i do know the 1g is bigger then the 2g and most change out the 2g to a 1g as a first/light/cheap upgrade.
i guess that's all i have, any knowledgeable input would be awesome.

The reason i ask is i have 2 buddies, one with a 1998(2nd gen) eclipse GST and another buddy with a 1992(?) 1st gen) GSX, both 2.0T, and wanted to see how they compared. i know they both have (stock) bigger motors, higher acceleration but mostly wanted to know if i could benefit from a turbo out of either of them or if they even interchangeable with our turbo.

thanks,
-Nick

If you are going to do a turbo swap, you have to look at (a) how much money are you willing to spend because some swaps require an engine rebuild and everyone requires other bolt ons (b) what kind of power you are planning on making. No, dont use a turbo from your friends...i dont think they will bolt up anyway. Start looking at tuning websites to get a better idea of what the stuff costs new and check around the forums for deals...Good luck

You also need to worry about getting a tune for it. And the DSMs used a TD04-12b stock, not a TD05. From what I've seen, the DSMs will make far more power on the stock turbo than the A4 will on its K03. I don't know for sure but I'm with Joe, I doubt they'll bolt up.

it won't bolt right up.... if you search calvin was asking this same exact question a yr or so ago.... also it will flow more and you will get minimum power out of it without a tune...

and to get that turbo running right on our car you would want to go standalone.... and that is not cheap either

ok thats fair, i was more curious just cuz eventually i want to spend the money for a GOOD t3(?) build in the future. I but just wanted to kno if it would bolt up and be cheap for a quick upgrade(the dsm turbo that is).

but if it were to be costly(even if at all possible) it would not be worth it when i could do it right/better even if even more costly with a t3 or better(wich sounds much better, imo)

i plan on a the bigger turbo setup but nothing huge still daily drivable. but thats way down the line.

check this out, lots of great info:

The first thing I think you should do is forget about swapping a DSM turbo. You entered a different realm of parts and applications when you bought an Audi. Read the thread I linked above and pick a turbo/tune based on your own personal horsepower goals, not what your buddies are running in their Eclipses.

And welcome to AF

If you want DSM 2G stock power on a budget start looking at the ATP Elim kits. They will get you close to 300whp. If you want to do something small now and be able to go larger later look at going with a T3 manifold and a GT2871r turbo now, then you can swap out to a 30r-35r size turbo after you build the motor/head.

DSM is transverse like most of the VW cars, not even the stock VW Transverse turbos will work on the A4. lol
